The Red Flame Messenger

February 2012

FROM THE PASTOR

“Greetings in the name of the One who calls us all beloved.” This is a common greeting given us in written communication by our former bishop, Rev. Violet Fisher. It is an apropos greeting for those of us in the Church, as we look to the season of Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday, February 22, 2012. Traditionally, Lent is a time of forty days- the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, preparing himself for his ministry. It was a time of prayer and introspection- looking within to see what might prevent his effectiveness or faithfulness in ministry. Mark’s gospel account gives only a couple of lines to this occurrence, but Luke fleshes out the story more. Luke’s account tells us Jesus faced the very human temptations of hunger, power, and security. Jesus faced each lure with scripture from
Deuteronomy- the law of the Israelite people. The devil himself quoted scripture, in Luke 4:10-11. But Jesus’ knowledge of the sacred writings allows him to “hold his own” in this face-off with temptation. Following the life and example of Jesus, Christians also take time during Lent to make an intentional effort to study scripture and think about how it can change our lives. Knowledge of scripture helps us grow spiritually- growing in strength of
faith, and determination to follow Jesus in living as God intends. We must allow our faith journey to change us- otherwise, why do it? In our congregation this year we are in the throes of making decisions that influence the future of not only our gathering, but that of the world around us. We exist as a church to help bring God’s reign, God’s kingdom, to earth- a society that operates from God’s unconditional love for humanity, and justice in
providing “salvation”- continuing life- for all of God’s creation. I invite you to make the commitment to a habit of reading scripture and daily devotions in Lent this year. There are many booklets and books to help us do this- please ask me if you need help in finding one for yourself and your family. Jesus told us, “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness” - then material needs will be added to you. Spiritual nurture fosters physical and emotional care. It is our first priority all year long- but particularly in this season of Lent. Decisions about material things become “no-brainers” when we tend to the spiritual things first.

I pray a meaningful Lent in preparation for a joyous Easter for us as a congregation and a witness to God’s presence in this world.

In Christ, Pastor Helen

Coins and loose change are being collected by the Sunday School to benefit the Sunday School Mission. Use designated coin cans or your own container and bring to church on the second Sunday of each month.  Box tops for Education (General Mills products) and Campbell Soup Labels are given to the Education Program sponsored by Eden Central Schools. Place them in the specially marked container near the mailboxes

WE ARE NO LONGER COLLECTING PLASTIC CAPS. Thank you for all your help with this.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

A federal law greatly restricts the disclosure of patient information by hospitals. As a result, the pastor and church office may not know that a member of the church has been admitted to the hospital. If you are hospitalized and want to notify the pastor, it is important that you (or a family member) inform the church office as soon as possible. Call 992-4211 (church office) or 992-3586 (parsonage).

CHURCH GROUPS
MISSION MOMENT

This is being written the day before we leave for Honduras to do a medical/construction mission with UMVIM (United Methodist Volunteers in Mission) from Jan 7th-23rd. We had hundreds of meds and supplies to pack before leaving. With funds from our church of $249.75, we purchased children’s vitamins with iron. This allowed us to individually package a 3 month supply for 82 children!! On behalf of Mission committee we are so
grateful for this wonderful gift. Vern will work during the 2nd week there assisting the team in construction of cooking stoves. Look for the next newsletter telling of the team’s effort. Most importantly, we are so grateful for your prayers for success of this mission. Its efforts are all for the glory of our heavenly Father.

In Christ’s love,
Vern & Judy Heiler

Churches in Action (CIA)

Thank you to all who participated by singing and/or baking cookies. We were able to share cookies, Christmas carols, and fellowship at 10 local group homes. We had a great turn-out this year with 144 carolers of all ages. It looks like Sunday evening worked for many to be able to participate. For many people this has become a favorite holiday tradition. The residents at the group homes also look forward to the evening, particularly the cookies! Thanks, Susan Rich

------------------------------------------------------------------------

A special thank you to the UMW for the donation of $100 to use for the Honduras UMVIM mission. We are giving this monetary donation to the UMVIM team leader, Chuck Garrigues, to use for purchase of much needed mission medication or supplies in Honduras. This gift is truly appreciated to enable the mission team to
help the less fortunate. Blessings, Judy & Vern Heiler

LAY LEADER

Hello Eden UMC!

It’s February already, and the theme is often LOVE….. so let’s take advantage and allow this month to really be about love… love for each other, love for ourselves, and above all, love for our Wonderful Creator! What better gift can we give our family, friends, and congregation than to show them REAL LOVE?

“Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.”- 1 John 3:18

[Jesus said] “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love.” - John 15:9

“Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses.” - Proverbs 10:12

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” -John 3:16

“Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.” -1 Corinthians 13:4-8

Much Love and Blessings, Liza Pope

THANK YOU’S

Thank you to everyone for the cards, thoughts and prayers for my knee. Shirley Charles

Thank you to all to gave their time to man the Salvation Army Kettles at Shurfine and Braymiller's Market, and to those who gave so generously to the kettles. $2750 was collected, which is up $550.00 over last year. This money will stay in our area to help those in need. Diana Graovac

Thank you church family for your prayers, love and kindness when our beloved Renee was so very ill, and then when she went to live with Jesus. Your cards were lovely and full of kind words.

We appreciate all the wonderful food brought to us. Some days, grief was so bad, it was hard to get out of bed, let alone decide what to cook that day. One never knows when this grief will hit and you can’t function. It is at these times God seems to lift us back up and tells us we have to go on. I can truly say we could feel the prayers of all of you. We could hear our Lord saying, “There are so many prayers coming to me for you and your family,
if you guys don’t keep going the people praying for you will think I’m not doing my job.” Dear friends, God did his job! We are doing OK. Some days are hard however we are lifted up to go on. Thank you all, dear friends.

Special thank you the following people: Pastor Helen; Mike Forster for his A/V work and the photo montage; Michelle Munro for the beautiful music; Nicoal Quesenberry for her help with the bulletins; Michelle Wilson, Friendship Circle and all the church members who helped with the luncheon; and Bill Laing, Gabriel Johnson and all those at Laing Funeral Home. Jackie Wenglik and family

Thank you, Gabi Rohauer! One of our own young ladies was so sad when she heard our Renee had passed away, she wanted to help in some way. She went door to door on our street, Roswell Parkway, to collect money. The funds went to Maddison’s education fund. Wenglik Family

No conclusions have yet been reached in this long term project, but it is evident at this point that there is
considerable interest in trying to find appropriate usage in order to preserve the building while also upgrading the
kitchen. Decisions in this regard are not made by the Hunt Chapel Task Group, but will be for the entire
congregation. Our Task Group chore is to continue to gather information and to keep you informed, so a Hunt

appreciated. All Hunt Chapel meetings are open to everyone. Thank you, thank you, thank you, all you Friends

FAITH AND FUN

PRAYER CORNER
Learning to Float

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you… in God I trust; I am not afraid.” –Psalm 56:3-4 (NRSV)

I was always fearful as a child. One of the things I feared was water, so I never learned to swim. I did
learn to float, but I had great fear in the beginning. I was very happy to be able to finally jump into the water and
float, conquering the fear I had known before.

For me, to trust Christ was like learning to float. The moment I chose to challenge my fear, truly relax, and
let go was when I began to float. Christ cares for us and wants us to release our fears, to relax, and to float –
secure in the knowledge that we are safe in a loving embrace.

We can leave our cares and problems in Jesus’ hands. He is our guide and will help us navigate through all
that we do every day. –Gladys Gines-Colon (Puerto Rico)

Bible Reading: Psalm 56:1-4, 9-13

Prayer: Dear Lord, when fears surface, we know you are by our side and that we can confide in you. Thank you.
As Jesus taught us, we pray, “Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy
will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins; for we also
forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Prayer Focus: Those learning to swim

Thought for the Day: Relax and let go. Let God hold you.

“My Angel”

My Divine Creator sent a messenger to me

To guide me from birth to eternity,

To give me courage for each day

And guide me in a wall marked way,

To climb the mountain of daily living

And ascend the steps to patience, love and understanding.

When strife is fierce, angel arms are strong

He shares my burden and gives me a song,

And brings me comfort, power and peace

And faithfully provides a joyous release.

He has heard my sighs and counted my tears

And endowed me with love through all these years.

I know that life can know no fear,

When you, my Angel, are so near.

The Red Flame Messenger

December 2011/January 2012

FROM THE PASTOR

I trust your Thanksgiving celebration was memorable. The
potluck Thanksgiving dinner we had after worship on November 13th
was wonderful. Kudos to Family Ministry coordinator and crew for
making it yummy and welcoming!

In this month of December, we continue our Advent journey,
which began November 27th, the first Sunday of Advent. In the
sermon for that day, I included the invitation from our Bishop,
Marcus Matthews for each of us to pray daily, fast weekly and give
generously to local missions and ministries, in an intentional way
during this Advent season. It’s not too late to jump on board with this
practice—pray, fast, give!

Also, 2011 gives us an unusual Christmas—falling on a
Sunday. It happens once every five or six years and I’m using this
opportunity for Christmas morning at church—“Coffee and Cocoa
with the Christ Child”. We will worship, but we will have an
informal atmosphere, celebrating somewhat like we do at home with
our families. Dress is informal—pajamas and blankets and even
teddy bears, if you choose! We will welcome Christ into our family,
not only this day, but every day of the year. I hope many will be here!

Doris and I pray a meaningful Advent season, and a joyous
Christmas for everyone. May the joy of a new year beginning once
again encourage and energize us for the tasks to come. In the words
of our 50th state—

 Mele Kalikimaka! Pastor Helen

Women's News

Merry Christmas!

Thank you to Linda Hock and crew for
their many hours of planning and preparations,
and to all who worked and supported the Election Day Dinner. A
special thanks to Dylan Schultz and the Boy Scouts for helping inside
with the clean up after they finished parking cars. There was a need for
creativity this year in the floor/space arrangements due to the limited
use of the Teague Room, but, as usual, no problem. Everything always
runs smoothly when everyone pitches in. Approximately 585 dinners
were served. This is the biggest source of funds for our Eden United
Methodist Women’s mission budget.

Thank you also to Bev Hyatt and the Friendship Circle for
heading up our participation in the Bon Ton Community Days fund
raiser. More information to follow regarding the proceeds.

On October 23, during worship service, it was our honor to
recognize Carol Lewis with a Mission Recognition pin for her
dedication and service to our UMW and congregation. A monetary gift
in her honor was sent to the Women’s Division to support ministries to
women, children and youth.

Please join us on Monday, December 5, at 7:30 pm to learn
about the work of Community Concern of WNY, Inc. Community
Concern is a not-for-profit social service agency founded in 1971 by
concerned community residents to improve the quality of life for those
in social or emotional distress. Senior Care Managers work closely
with other service providers to improve the standard of living for
seniors in our community. Friendship Circle will be hostess.

Once again, New Life Circle will be putting together cookie
boxes for the Eden/North Collins Food Pantry. We will be meeting in
the church kitchen at 7 pm on December 12 to make up the boxes. Any
contribution of cookies will be most welcome!

If you are interested in being on the Church Council in 2012 as
representative of our UMW, please let me know. Plus, we are still
looking for women to serve on the Nominations Committee, as part of a
Programs Committee, and President for the upcoming year.

Coming up in early 2012

January 8 – Installation of Officers during worship service.

February 6 – 7:30 pm General meeting. Erin Motak will tell us about
her Mission of Peace trip to Nicaragua. New Life Circle is hostess.

Next board meeting will be January 16, 2012.

It has been an honor to serve as your Eden United Methodist
Women’s President for the past four years. Peace be with all of you this
Christmas and in the coming year. Dawn

LAY LEADER

Hello Eden UMC!

As we enter into this final month of 2011, have we done all that
we wanted to do? And more than that, are we who we want to be?
There is always no time like the present to work toward becoming more
the unique and incredible person God created us to be. Extra written
devotions abound this time of year to help us, and the adult Sunday
school class is just beginning a book all about God’s will.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to
prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a
future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

If we’ve been going strong or distracted by many things, what
better time than this Christmas season, a season of wonder, to reconnect
with Our Heavenly Father and the hope and prosperity He has awaiting
us! Merry Christmas! Liza Pope

PRAYER CORNER

Just Jesus

Jesus said, “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in
the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and
teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”

-Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV)

Recently I read a story about a group of Christians in China and
how they approached evangelism. They had a great desire to teach the
gospel and spread the news about Jesus to as many people as possible.
"We can't afford any big programs or fancy gospel presentations," they
said. "All we have to give people is Jesus."

In the first century, the church communicated the good news of
Jesus throughout their world without fancy programs or elaborate
equipment. They lived their faith and taught their neighbors and friends,
and the church saw rapid growth. All they had to give people was Jesus.
We can do the same. All we need is the willingness and the voice to
share with others the "reason for the hope that [we] have . . . with
gentleness and respect" (1 Pet. 3:15). If we look for opportunities to
introduce our community and the world to Jesus and his life-giving
message, we will find them. -Andy Baker (Tennessee USA)

Bible Reading: Romans 10:12-18

Prayer: Dear God, help us to be willing to teach others about your son
and the salvation he brings. Amen.

Prayer Focus: For greater willingness to witness

Thought for the Day: It doesn’t cost money to share the gospel in our
daily interactions.

The Upper Room, Saturday, September 27th, 2011

IMPORTANT—PLEASE NOTE!!
Starting in February 2012, we will be going ELECTRONIC
with our newsletter. If you wish to receive a newsletter, please
contact the office (992-4211,
edenumc1@verizon.net) with your
email address. If you would like to still receive a paper copy,
please notify the church office and we ask that you please make
a donation to cover the cost of mailing. Thank you!

ECUMENICAL CHRISTMAS

This year’s 38th Annual Community Christmas will be on
Sunday, December 4 at Immaculate Conception RC Church (8791 South
Main Street, Eden). The Celebration Service starts at 3 pm and features
choirs and musical groups from Eden’s churches, reading from Holy
Scripture, and congregational singing. Gifts of non-perishable food and
cash donations will be collected as an offering for our local Eden/North
Collins Food Pantry. Refreshments will follow the service in the Parish
Center of Immaculate Conception Church.

We invite you to join with your fellow townspeople as we
celebrate our Lord’s birth.

JOYFUL NOISE

Our Joyful Noise choir will sing with the children from ICC &
St Paul’s at the Community Christmas Celebration on Sunday, Dec. 4 at
3:00 at ICC. All kids age 4 – 12 are invited to join us. We practice on
Sundays at 10:30 in room 4, and we sing in church about once a month.

PLEASE NOTE!

The Christmas Candlelight Service will be at 10PM this
year, not 11PM. Mark your calendars!

CUTLERY ITEMS
Cutlery items (butcher knives, knives, pizza cutters, food
choppers, servers and peelers) are available for sale from Dorothy
Mackey or other members of the Louise Hickman Circle.

PRAYER SHAWLS

shawls to give. If interested, please contact ABetty Hill (992-3168)
or any member of the New Life Circle for instructions.

REMINDER TO SAVERS

.
Coins and loose change are being collected by the Sunday School
to benefit the Sunday School Mission. Use designated coin cans or
your own container and bring to church on the second Sunday of
each month, resuming in September.
.
Box tops for Education (General Mills products) and
Campbell Soup Labels are given to the Education Program
sponsored by Eden Central Schools. Place them in the specially
marked container near the mailboxes in the hallway by the office.
There is also a special box to benefit Red Bird Mission.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

A federal law greatly restricts the disclosure of patient
information by hospitals. As a result, the pastor and church office may
not know that a member of the church has been admitted to the hospital.
If you are hospitalized and want to notify the pastor, it is important that
you (or a family member) inform the church office as soon as possible.
Call 992-4211 (church office) or 992-3586 (parsonage).

CHURCH COLUMBARIUM

Our church’s Columbarium offers an opportunity for
persons who wish to have their ashes inurned as a final resting
place. Niches cost $750 each and can be purchased at any time.
One-half of the cost is tax deductible as a donation to the church.
Application forms and/or other information are available from
Jackie Wenglik, Columbarium chairperson, or the church office.

TRUSTEES

The Trustees have selected a contractor to plow snow. We
need volunteers to help with shoveling during heavy snow fall events.
If you are willing to help, please come to the church when we are
having snow storms.

Most of you know that our liability and property insurance
rates almost tripled this year. The Upper NY Conference mandates
that we purchase our insurance through their master insurance
program. The Trustees have evaluated our insurance policy and find
that the church is over-insured. We have obtained a price quote from
a local insurance provider that is considerably cheaper than the
amount we pay the Conference. We’ve tried to discuss this matter
with Conference officials, but they do not return our calls or answer
our letters. The issue was brought up during the Church Charge
Conference on October 30th with the District Superintendent present.
The congregation voted to omit the insurance payment from the 2012
budget, pending further inquiries. At the District Superintendent’s
request, the Trustees sent him a packet of documents supporting our
position. The Trustees will remain steadfast regarding this issue
because it is your money we are obligated to protect.

JOIN US FOR DINNER AND A PLAY!

On Saturday, December 10th there will be a potluck dinner at
6:00. Bring your place setting and a dish to pass. We will have
cupcakes and sing “Happy Birthday” to Jesus. Gloria Nedimyer is the
person to see if you have questions about the dinner.

Then at 7:00, the children will present a play “Live from
Bethlehem!” Rehearsals are going well during junior church on Sunday
mornings, and our young news reporters are excited to report the story
“Live from Bethlehem!”

A big “Thank You” goes out to my assistants Holly, Erynn and
Kaitlyn and my piano player, Laura LeBaron.

Following the play, I heard there will be a very special visitor.
He will be accepting wish lists from all the good boys and girls!

Please call or email if you have questions.

Cathy Jeffers (947-5440)
